Can Baby be Too Young for Halloween?

How old was your baby when you took them Trick-or-Treating for the first time? D was only 8 months old. Some might say that’s a little too young, but I really feel it all depends on the situation. We of course did not treat him to any candy at 8 months old – daddy kept that all for himself, and by the time we had made it through the neighborhood he was passed out on mommy’s shoulder. But I have to say, it was a lot of fun to get him all dressed up and it was the first of many years to come where we would get together with one of my oldest friends, her husband and their daughter who just happens to be the same exact age as D. They now come over every year, and this year will be my favorite of the last three. D is going to be Super Boy and his little girlfriend is going to be Super Girl – how cute is that!

D-s-first-halloween-(1).jpgHowever, I’ll be honest, we probably wouldn’t have gone Trick-or-Treating at 8 months had we not lived in such a quiet little neighborhood. There are about 25 houses in my half circle and we had just moved into our house about a year prior. Therefore, we hadn’t met many of our neighbors and this was a great chance to do just that, AND introduce them to our new son of course. But a few things that didn’t even cross my mind that probably should have are:

  1. Are the houses in my neighborhood dressed to scare? Or are they pretty kid friendly?
  2. Were there going to be a lot of older, scarily dressed kids around the neighborhood that would scare D?
  3. Are any of our neighbors going to jump out and scare us? Or are any of them going to answer the door in a really scary costume?

Some of these things could have really frightened D – and still can at 2 ½ years old. So, I guess it’s a good thing that we started so early because we now know how “kid friendly” our neighborhood is when it comes to having a fun, fright-less night.

iVillage actually has a great article entitled, Is Your Child Too Young to Trick-or-Treat

we realized that there are just too many "adult" scary/graphic images out there for an infant. Blake is 6, and we feel that he is now at an age were he can enjoy all the fun Halloween can be, especially trick-or-treating.

I always took my kids, from the time they were tiny infants!

We are taking our 9 month old Trick or Treating this year, but going to the mall for it! Our local mall has a Trick or treating event! No scary bushes or unknowns. Also, going to a trunk or treat event, which have become very popular. During the day usually and it's safer!
